Print your digital pictures at home? A photo printer makes it simple. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. As consumers have migrated to digital cameras….many of their pictures reside only in their computers….on Web sites like Kodak's Gallery or Shutterfly….or if they do want prints…they either order from those services or take their memory cards to the local drug store. Investing in a dedicated photo printer…can make sharing prints fast and fun. Epson's latest…the PictureMate Dash…can handle direct connections to cameras…just about every kind of memory card….and turns out high quality 4 by 6 snapshots. Product manager Kristi Fox…

"We have two new models..we have PictureMate Dash and PictureMate Zoom. And they have the exact same features except PictureMate Zoom has a built in CD burner so you can back up all your files to CDs. And some of the new improvements that we made to the product this year is we increased the size of the LCD screen, it's 3.6 inches. That makes it a lot easier for consumers to find the picture where everybody's looking in the right direction ..and find the picture they want to print. Then we also increased the print speed, it's about 37 seconds for a 4 by 6 photo, which is faster than any of our competition. And we added a one touch cropping button..the zoom button on the control panel is also a cropping button."

The cost of a print works out to about 27 cents…and the longevity…Epson claims…is about 200 years. Matte prints are slightly higher at 34 cents. The Dash is priced at about a hundred dollars. The Zoom…with the CD burner…is double the price. The biggest drawback of the printers is their limitation to 4 by 6 prints. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
