The Best Tech of the Year

The best tech of the year. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Of all of the hundreds of new technology products and services that came to market this year, only a few are what you could really call game changing. Apple changed the game in a number of ways with the iPhone. When it came out at the end of June, AT&T's Mark Siegel told us….

"Somehow you have to encounter it. It is a huge presence. And we think this is going to generate tremendous interest and tremendous demand"

That has been spreading around the world. Another game changing device that arrived this year….Amazon's first venture into hardware…with an electronic book reader called Kindle. CEO Jeff Bezos…

"Well Kindle is wireless. So one of the things that allows is…you can think of a book and have it in less than a minute."

Also changing the game….the One Laptop Per Child XO. Nicholas Negroponte and others from the MIT Media Lab set out …with partners…to build an under one hundred dollar laptop that could be used by children in developing countries. They haven't quite gotten the price down that far. But by year's end, the XO arrived and OLPC allowed consumers to participate with a Give One Get One program. There are a couple of new services worth mentioning as well. They include Ooma, a voice over IP phone service…where you never get a phone bill…after buying a hub that becomes part of a peer to peer phone network. And InGrid….is a home security system…that you can control via the Internet. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
