Digital Media Player...No PC Required: Ibiza Rhapsody

Techstination feature for Friday, December 28, 2007

A digital media player....that never needs a computer. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. More and more digital music players have the ability to connect to WiFi networks. The iPod Touch, Microsoft's Zune, and models from Archos. What Haier...one of the largest consumer electronics companies in China has made....is the Ibiza...a player that connects wirelessly to the Rhapsody music service from Real Networks. You can stream music...or download songs...without ever having to connect it to a PC. The software running the device was created by Varia Mobile, where Evan Feldman says...

"You can think about it as your complete portable media solution. You don't need a PC to acquire new music or listen to music that you want to try or sample out. You have access to more than four million songs in the Rhapsody catalog directly on the device. It also downloads AOL videos from their user generated content, which is sort of like YouTube, directly to the device as well. And then, you can also subscribe to thousands of podcasts, directly on the device and be able to catch up with your favorite programming whenever you want."

There's also a Web browser. Of course, you can plug it into a PC to sync content as you can with other media players. A 30 gigabyte version sells for about three hundred dollars. It uses a touchpad control....not as elegant as the iPod or the new Zune....but usable nonetheless. Another plus...integrated Bluetooth. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
