Starting the New Year on the Right Note...eMedia

Techstination feature for Friday, January 4, 2008

Starting the new year on the right note. A musical note. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. If one of your goals for this year is to learn to play a musical instrument, your computer can help. eMedia Music was started by former Microsoft employee Adrian Burton about ten years ago when he was learning to play the guitar. Now his company is up to Guitar Method version 4 along with Piano and Keyboard Method version 2. About the role software music lessons can play, Burton says…

"Nothing will match a private lesson from an excellent teacher. But that's not an option for everyone, whether it be schedule or expense. It also works well as a supplement to lessons where it just gives you something to follow along with. So if you're taking a private lesson once a week, it's great to have this sort of multimedia teacher for the rest of the week."

There are some free sample lessons at emediamusic.com. eMedia Guitar Method sells for about sixty dollars. The company says about a million people have used its software to learn to play…

"We get letters from people who say they've tried books. They've tried to find a teacher and all that and it hasn't worked for them. And this has really done it for them. That's very rewarding."

It's like having a teacher with infinite patience. eMedia is expanding…into violin software for children as well. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
