One Laptop per Child Expanding into U.S.

One Laptop Per child expands into the U.S. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. The non-profit organization headed by Nicholas Negroponte….which had initially been focused on providing laptops to young people in developing countries…has added needy students in the U.S. to its agenda. The program….which had another falling out with Intel just prior to the start of this year's Consumer Electronics Show….has a target of bringing the cost of the laptops down to a hundred dollars. There are those in the industry who still question the value of the OLPC program…pointing out that everyday laptops….can be found for under four hundred dollars today. Negroponte's response ?

"You've got to distinguish between a laptop that you and I use for productivity purposes in lets say an office environment or a university environment or even a high school environment…from something that is more rugged, uses so little power you can hand crank it, works in the sunlight, has features that your laptop and my laptop either don't need or it's much too hard for them to provide that. One Laptop Per Child isn't a laptop program. It's really an education program. It turns out that what's been designed in that laptop follows a theory of education called constructionism which is very, very important."
