Guitar Hero Keeps Growing

Techstination feature for Thursday, January 31, 2008

Guitar Hero keeps growing. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. The Guitar Hero franchise has passed the billion dollar mark in sales in a little more than two years according to the NPD Group. And Guitar Hero III…Legends of Rock…was the number one seller for all of 2007….and is still going strong. Kai Huang is founder and president of RedOctane…the studio that developed the franchise…

"It's a lot of fun, Fred, to see the embracement of this game. You know, Guitar Hero has really caught on really quickly. It's become a mass market phenomenon in just a couple of years. Rolling Stone calls Guitar Hero the biggest thing to happen to rock and roll in the last five years."

The first add on song pack for the game is out for the Xbox 360…and is being worked on for other platforms. Beyond that Huang says…Red Octane isn't standing still. What's in the works?

"First is, there are new genres of music. Secondly, downloadable music is a big area of opportunity. Lastly, there are opportunities to move into other areas of music instrument games. Classic rock and guitar has been our focus, but we think there are opportunities to do other instrument based games."

RedOctane does has some competition these days from Rock Band…created by Harmonix and Electronic Arts. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
