Making phone calls with a PlayStation Portable. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Sony has released an update to its second generation PSP…that will allow the device to connect to Skype, the eBay owned Internet communications service. Skype's general manager for North America Don Albert…

"The PlayStation Portable, the PSP 2000, which is the recent slim version of the device, now will have Skype available for use on that device." How many users of Skype do you think you can add through the PSP? "We can't make any projections at this point, but we think it's just a natural enhancement of where Sony is trying to take that device. So imagine that if you're using the Sony to play a multiplayer game wirelessly, you can actually call your buddy in advance and set up the game and then call when the game is over and do some trash talking. Not only that, but you can actually use it just to make regular calls when you're in a WiFi hotspot or an open network."

To use Skype on one of the newer PSPs, you'll need a Skype account…which is free for Skype to Skype calls….the latest firmware update for the device….and a PSP headset…which sells for about twenty dollars. The PSP 2000 is priced at about 170 dollars. You can find us on the Web with an archive of reports at Bootcamp.com. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
