Magic in Mobile Phones... Sony Ericsson Style

Techstination feature for Friday, February 8, 2008

Music on mobile phones. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Apple set the standard last year…for combining a media player with a mobile phone… with the introduction of the iPhone. But competitors are battling back with some unique features of their own. For instance….a flip phone called the Z555….will let you silence the ringer….simply by waving your hand over it. It's from Sony Ericsson and it makes you look like a magician. North Americas President Najmi Jarwala….

"We've been coming up with many creative ways of using other attributes, both motion sensing within the phone as well as something that we introduced at the CES this year called gesture control. That's not actually moving the phone itself, but it's controlling attributes of the phone by proximity. So the phone, the Z triple 5 that we've launched at CES, you can silence it, you can mute it, but just waving your hand over it. So if you're in a meeting and the phone rings, you don't have the distraction of picking it up and either pressing busy or whatever…you can just kind of move your hand over it and it will mute."

Pretty impressive. The phone uses its camera to detect the wave of your hand. The company is also coming out with new Walkman handsets….which can use motion sensing technology….almost like a Nintendo Wii controller…

"And by movements of the phone you can move from one track to the next."
