More Connectivity...on a Little Chip

More connectivity on a little chip. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. More and more mobile phones, portable navigation devices and even digital music players these days are incorporating Bluetooth technology. Wireless Bluetooth headsets are pretty common…allowing mobile phone users to talk hands-free. Now STMicroelectronics has combined Bluetooth technology with an FM radio receiver and transmitter on a single chip. What will that mean? STMicro's connectivity marketing director Steve Beckers…

"The individual technologies are existing but the fact that this chip brings them combined in an easy to integrate way in cell phones will further stimulate the adoption of cell phones with this type of technology and cell phones more and more will become the devices that integrate a lot of multimedia functions enabling streaming of audio not only to a Bluetooth stereo headset but also, to, for instance a car radio using existing technology. Only a few car radios today are equipped with Bluetooth."

And since it is cheap and on a single chip….you're likely to see more and more mobile phones incorporating not only Bluetooth…but FM radio receivers and tramsitters. More phones have the ability to act as music players and include memory card slots or lots of built in flash memory for storing songs. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
