Memory Card Prices Keep Dropping

Techstination feature for Thursday, March 6, 2008

Memory card prices keep dropping. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. More memory for less money. That's been the good news for consumers for years….when it comes to buying memory cards for digital cameras, digital picture frames, mobile phones and music players. And this year…the forecast is for more big price drops. At Lexar Media, owned by Micron Technology, vice president Mark Adams says…the falling prices give consumers an opportunity to buy higher quality cards…

"The larger the data, the less performance you get out of a standard value card. And when you go into the retail store, you'll see different speed ratings. You'll see a 60X or an 80X or a 133X."

And the faster speed makes more of a difference if you've upgraded to a digital SLR or higher megapixel point and shoot camera…

"That has a lot to do with how fast your card reads and writes to it, because you're capturing the image and the camera is then writing to that card."

You pay more for a higher speed memory card….but with the lower prices…those pro level products are more affordable for everyone. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
