Wireless Phones Get Wild

Techstination feature for Wednesday, September 15, 1999

Wireless phones get wild. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bootcamp, a report on computers and technology. It sort of sounds like the old ads for Timex watches....they can take a licking and keep on ticking. Ericsson is out with a new line of wireless phones...including one nicknamed...The Rock...

"And it's the world's first water, dust and shock resistant phone. This phone operates on all the cellular networks, that is it's a tri-mode phone around the country so it has unsurpassed coverage. In addition to that, though, it also has two-way radio features, so it can work just like a walkie-talkie and it allows small businesses and work groups to do group calling."

Ericsson's Mike Isgrig. Drop it in water, they claim, and it will still work. The price... about three hundred dollars. There are other new models on the way that will connect to the Internet. For instance, the I 888....

"It has a built in modem with an infrared port, so you can take it and lie it right down next to your laptop computer and you can be doing wireless email and sending information and even browsing the web."

The I888 sells for under three hundred dollars as well. Ericsson is coming out with a Mobile Companion to work with the phone. It is a pocket sized computer that can do everything from word processing to names and phone numbers...and in conjunction with the wireless phone, connect to the net.
