Carbonite Adding Features to Online Backup

Techstination feature for Wednesday, March 26, 2008

Carbonite is adding features to online backup. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. It's one of those things that people often don't pay too much attention to until it is too late. Backing up all of those digital files….that these days include your family photos….your digital music…..and perhaps…your financial data as well. Backing up onto an external hard drive….is the least you can do. An even better solution, is to use a reliable online back up service. They have become a lot more affordable of late. Carbonite, for instance, charges 50 dollars a year for an unlimited amount of data from a single PC. CEO David Friend…

"We have hundreds of thousands of users in a hundred and eleven countries now around the world. Carbonite is available in eleven languages. And anybody can try it for free. You don't need a credit card. You go to www.carbonite.com and take the free trial."

Set up is simple....and once installed…your files are automatically backed up whenever your PC is connected to the Internet. What gets backed up?

"The only thing we don't back up is Windows itself, the operating system, and program files. Because if you restore those to a new computer, they wouldn't work."

All of the files are encrypted for security. Carbonite is adding a Mac version…and a feature to give users access to their files from other PCs. There is competition….from Mozy.com…owned by EMC….and others. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
