In Vehicle Technology Just Getting Started

In-vehicle technology. It's just getting started. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Navigation systems are now common…in cars…along with back seat entertainment systems. But there's much more to come. The Consumer Electronics Association is predicting sales of in-vehicle electronics will grow 13 percent this year to more than 12.8 billion dollars….even with a slowing economy. The CEA's Jenn Bemisderfer..

"First, what we're seeing in major trends, is that everything that's happening in the home, people want in their car. So from the basics, MP3 players, they want their digital content. They want their music libraries from the home to the car. So we're seeing a lot of devices that enable you to integrate your iPod into your car stereo for example. And then of course, there's video. You're able to get great quality video at home, now you're able to do that in the car."

Mobile satellite TV services are just getting started. About whether the gadgets can be too much of a distraction, the CEA says technology is trying to solve that too…

"One of the really great trends we see in the car now is voice recognition. And one of the products that I've seen from Panasonic allows you to interact, not just the device to give you voice prompts, but for you to do voice commands. So …give me directions to CVS…for example. And it will then talk back to you. So it will eliminate some of the focus that you have to have."

And it may not be too long before high definition screens…start migrating to vehicles as well. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
