Mobile Searching Via Your Voice

Techstination feature for Tuesday, April 22, 2008

Mobile searching via your voice. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Yahoo is updating its mobile search tool…adding some neat new features including the ability to do an online search…using your voice. Executive Vice President Marco Boerries…

"You can now talk to oneSearch. Rather than type in your query, you can say.. British Airways flight 287…and then we are going to get you all of the information. Or…sushi, or 21 for a movie title. So this is really revolutionary and amazing because so far, all of the voice technologies have been very specialized grammar around local search to find restaurants or categories. And nobody really cracked the code to just don't think what you want to look for, but just say anything and get back the answer. And that's what oneSearch voice is." Initially that works on certain Blackberry handsets..and how quickly will that be expanded? "We have made available today, a technology preview that works currently on Blackberries. And over the next couple months, we're going to increase it to work on much, much more handsets. Eventually by the end of the year, on over 500 handsets."

You can find more information at mobile.yahoo.com. If you have a Blackberry Pearl…there's a link there that will let you enter your mobile number to download oneSearch voice to your phone. In the meantime…Windows mobile users…can also use new voice functions with Microsoft's Live Search free application. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
