A Big New Release From Spielberg (Hint: Not a Movie)

Techstination feature for Thursday, May 8, 2008

A big new release from Steven Spielberg. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. Oh sure…Spielberg’s got a little movie coming out this month with that Indiana Jones character. But his other new release…is a video game for the Nintendo Wii….called Boom Blox. It’s a collaboration with Electronic Arts, where senior producer Amir Rahimi says….it started when Spielberg showed up at the E3 video game conference two years ago…and got a first hand look at the Nintendo Wii….

"He loved the accessibility, he loved the simplicity and came up with an idea for a game that tees off on the compulsion that just about everyone in the world has to build something up, whether it’s blocks in this case or sand castles or dominos or whatever, and knock them to the ground."

And the concept combined with the Wii controller…makes for a game likely to be as addictive as some of the old classics…like Tetris.

"On top of that, there’s a cast of over thirty characters. Each of them have their own behaviors and you’re sort of introduced to these characters in four different themed worlds.that were heavily art directed and creative directed by Steven Spielberg. So you actually travel through these lands, you’re introduced to a simple story line that you progress through. Tons of imagination going on here. It’s the perfect marriage of the amazing imagination of Steve Spielberg and the amazing game play of the Nintendo Wii."

It’s designed for a wide range of ages…to allow families to play together. Much more active than say…watching a movie. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I’m Fred Fishkin.
