Calling a Crazy Taxi... Mobile Games

Techstination feature for Tuesday, May 13, 2008

Calling a Crazy Taxi…on your mobile phone. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Video game publishers count on games for consoles…like the Wii, PS3 and Xbox360 along with the PC for most of their sales. But as mobile phones get more and more powerful….with higher resolution screens ….they hope more people will be attracted to playing games on their handsets. At Sega Mobile, marketing director Carrie Cowan says Apple's iPhone, for example, is attracting lots of attention as a gaming platform…

"We see a tremendous opportunity in iPhone. Not only from a merchandising and a game perspective, but from a game design perspective. iPhone really does mark a fundamental shift in handset capabilities for the wireless industry. And we, as game content publishers are excited about the opportunity to develop for the platform. Inherently because of the way the consumer interacts with it. It doesn't have a keypad. You maneuver it with touch. And it also has a tipping accelerometer feature."

Sega Mobile is readying Super Monkey Ball for the iPhone….and has announced some other titles that will be released on mobile platforms this year. They include Beijing 2008, the classic space combat shooter Zaxxon….and a mobile version of Crazy Taxi…will let you play while you're in the back seat of a cab. Sonic the Hedgehog has been Sega Mobile's biggest seller…and a new version of that….is due in November. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
