Doing more with points of interest. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. If you have a GPS navigation system, chances are you're familiar with what are called points of interest. They are typically categorized into things like restaurants, theatres, museums and shopping centers. With many portable navigation systems, there are ways to personalize those points of interest.....and at a site called P-o-i or Poifriend.com ....you can share them with others....and find all kinds of new categories. Co-founder Bill McLean ...

"We envisioned creating a community, worldwide, where people could come together, under the premise that they are sharing places that are personally important to them, and determining to what extent they want to share that with the world or just with a small group of friends or individually for their own use."

How does it work....

"Poifriend connects people and the places that are important to them. And it's really the first site of its kind that allows any of the participants on the site to find or create points of interest that are then available for download to GPS or to printable maps and driving directions. In addition to that, individuals who visit the site have the ability to comment on the individual locations that they have identified as a point of interest to themselves. They can rate them, they can share with one another."

The idea has lots of potential as the use of portable navigation continues to grow. The site is free. The goal of the creators is to make money through groups of commercial points of interest. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
