Turning Your Computer into an Observatory

Techstination feature for Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Turning your computer into an observatory. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Microsoft Virtual Earth and Google Earth have brought some spectacular views of the earth….through satellite imagery. Now Microsoft is opening up the heavens….with a free application called WorldWide Telescope. Curtis Wong, principle researcher with Microsoft Next Media Research….says the program is available for Windows based PCs at WorldWideTelescope.org….

“When you run it, if you look on the Web site, it has the technical requirements for your machine. When you run it, there are a number of guided tours you can take that will take you through the universe. All kinds of tours about galaxies and nebula and other things. As you're taking these different tours, if you see something interesting, you can always pause the tour, and you have the full resources of WorldWide Telescope underneath there, so you can then see what that object looks like in other wavelengths from other telescopes. You can find out more information about it. You can see other tours that relate to that object. And you can take those tours or get back on the bus and continue the tour as you went.”

The images are some of the best from ground and space based telescopes. The list of features goes on…

“In WorldWide Telescope, you can save images into a collection that you can then browse from. You can create your own guided tour in the universe and share those with other people.”

Again…it's a free download at WorldWideTelescope.org. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
