Nintendo Wins Fans for the Wii Fit

Techstination feature for Tuesday, May 27, 2008

Nintendo wins fans for the Wii Fit. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. They were lined up out the door at Nintendo's World Store in New York's Rockefeller Center when Nintendo's new exercise system for the Wii game console went on sale. And the Wii Fit….may give fits to Microsoft and Sony…which have been trailing Nintendo in sales ever since the Wii game console was released. Nintendo Executive VP Cammie Dunaway….

"What the Wii Fit is, is it's a new interactive video game that combines a balance board with software that has about 40 different activities. So you can do everything from yoga to strength training to balance games, aerobics. You can set goals for yourself. You can track your progress over time."

And it adds a light hearted approach…with a touch of humor. Step on the balance board…and the game replies…oh..! Behind the board is some pretty interesting technical wizardry…

"There's actually very sophisticated technology behind the Wii Fit balance board. It has four sensors. So it's measuring the slightest weight shifts…side to side…or front to back. And these sensors are actually the same type of sensors that are used after earthquakes to measure seismic shifts. As I understand, you can actually find something similar in technology that measures your golf swing that costs about 20 thousand dollars."

Making the 90 dollar price of the Wii Fit…seem like a bargain. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
