Digital Music Downloading for Purists

Techstination feature for Wednesday, May 28, 2008

Digital music downloading…without compromise. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Music that's downloaded onto portable music players usually sounds pretty good. But to audiophiles…pretty good…isn't nearly good enough. Musician David Chesky has been catering to that market for years ….with Chesky Records…a partnership with his brother. They are purists…when it comes to sound….and they have won fans around the world for their label. Now they have created a downloading service….with the same philosophy….

"This new service is called HDTracks. And this is an offshoot of our company because when you buy things on the Web they're 128 kilobits compressed files. But HDTracks is the only Web service in the world that has CD quality, uncompressed files with complete PDF liner notes and no DRM. So you can play it on any device you want and it's just like the experience of going to a record store. You get the liner notes as well."

The site is capturing the attention of an increasing number of labels and artists….across a range of genres …

"Our music is very adult oriented. We have a great classical collection, jazz, world music, adult rock and some country and a lot of folk, blue grass and blues. So these are the genres we're concentrating in."

Albums are priced at about 12 dollars…a bit higher than services like iTunes. Keep in mind, higher quality means larger file sizes as well. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
