Easier, Cheaper Portable Video Content

Techstination feature for Monday, June 16, 2008

Getting video from here to there in the digital age, isn't always easy. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. One of the reasons why Apple has been so successful with the iPod….is how easy it is use. Much of that has to do with the iTunes software for transferring music, photos and video from a computer to the device. That all works well enough when you are purchasing your music or videos from Apple. But at a dollar 99 for a TV episode…that can get pretty expensive. Pinnacle Systems is selling a device that lets you record your own content….from any analog source…a cable box, DVD player….without the need to go through a computer at all. Pinnacle Video Transfer product manager Travis White…

"This particular device is quite small. And it is a PC-less video capture experience. So what you end up doing is, you plug in on one side of the device the cables coming from your VCR or set top box or whatever analog video is coming from. And on the other side of the device, you plug in USB. And that USB could be a little flash stick or it could be a little hard drive or it could be your iPod, your video iPod or your PSP."

One drawback is…there is no timer. So if you are recording a program or a movie…you have to stick around to stop the recording. But the simplicity is a big plus. The Pinnacle Video Transfer sells for under 130 dollars. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
