New Anti-Theft Technology from OnStar

Techstination feature for Wednesday, July 2, 2008

A new anti-theft system from OnStar. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. One of the advantages GM's OnStar system has offered subscribers over the years….has bee the ability to track down cars that have been stolen. Starting with many 2009 model year cars equipped with OnStar….some new technology is being added called stolen vehicle slowdown. Communications manager Cristi Vazquez….

"Once a subscriber has actually filed a police report and said that their vehicle's stolen, we will work, as we do today about 700 times a month, with the police to actually locate the vehicle. Once they have the vehicle in sight, we'll flash the lights on the vehicle so that everybody knows that we're talking about the same vehicle. And then when the police tell us that it is clear to do so, we'll actually send a signal using cellular technology to the vehicle's OnStar system, which will then interact with the powertrain system and remotely slow the vehicle down."

The stolen car will be slowed down to 3 to 5 miles an hour…no matter how fast the thief tries to go. The idea is to save lives by eliminating the need for a high speed chase…which endangers police and the public. The new feature will only be available in new models…and will become operational in October. OnStar, even without the stolen vehicle slowdown system, has helped owners and police recover thousands of vehicles a year. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
