It is designed to add a terabyte of storage to a home network….that can be used by computers…game consoles and other digital devices. Seagate’s Nathan Papdopulos…

“One of the key benefits of this drive is you can plug it into your router and be able to back up every system that you have in the home, regardless of the platform. So it’s a Linux based hard drive and being that it’s plugged into the router instead of into the machine, you could back up both Mac OS and Windows.”

It also supports media streaming protocols. That means you can access photos, music or videos stored on the drive…from game consoles like Sony’s PlayStation 3 or Microsoft’s Xbox 360….or even some network capable high definition TVs. At about 325 dollars, Seagate is priced above the competing MyBook drives from Western Digital. Central Axis includes the ability to log into the drive through any Internet browser from anywhere…letting your share your photos, for instance, with friends and family…

”You could both read and write to the drive, and actually the administrator would control when you’re sharing a folder, whether that person could just view the files or if they could download and edit them.”
