Sony Says the PS3 is Just Getting Started

Techstination feature for Friday, July 25, 2008

Sony says the PlayStation just getting started. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. After a less than stellar start....Sony says its PlayStation 3 game console is gaining momentum.....and may eventually sell more than the 140 million units achieved by the PlayStation 2. Sony has added the ability to download high definition TV shows and movies....and will be expanding the storage capacity to 80 gigabytes at a price point of 399 dollars. Beyond that, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai says...

"I think there's a lot more to come in terms of both the gaming experience that the developers have really just started to scratch the surface with on the PlayStation well as some of the other non-game applications, service and content that we want to bring to the PlayStation 3."

At this year's E3 trade show, Microsoft Senior VP Don Mattrick vowed the Xbox 360 will outsell the PS3...during the life cycle of this console generation. Hirai's response...

"Well first of all I think it's interesting that he mentioned the duration of this cycle. As you know we have always embarked on a ten year life cycle of our platforms. The PlayStation 2, still in its 9th year, so we still have a year to go for that 10 year mark...but we've already cleared a hundred and thirty million units. I don't see the Xbox or the GameCube still competing with us."

Hirai says the race...from Sony's perspective....has a long way to go. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
