Consumer Electronics Association Battles for Free Trade

Techstination feature for Monday, July 28, 2008

The Consumer Electronics Association takes its "Free Trade" battle to the streets. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. The association which represents more than two thousand companies large and small in the consumer electronics field.....has embarked on what it calls the "America Wins With Trade" campaign. CEO Gary Shapiro....
"The goal of the campaign is to make sure that the American public has a sense that trade is good. For the first time in our recent history, we've seen polls which show that the majority of Americans don't view free trade as a positive. They feel it's taking away jobs, they feel it's hurting America. And it's funny because the rest of the world is valuing free trade heavily. And when we talk to our political leaders in Washington, they agree that free trade is a good thing but they say they are hearing from the constituents the other way. So it's our job, as part of the business community to get our there and talk about the virtues of free trade. The Consumer Electronics Association represents 22 hundred high tech companies and companies that sell high tech. And we're united on this issue of the importance of trade to our future as a nation, to our industry and to the people of our country."
The association is looking to make the issue part of the national debate in the Presidential Election this year. About the consequences of restricting trade, the consumer electronics association head says...
"Frankly it would be a disaster for our country if we erect walls around us.
