If you have a mouse in your house, the kind that's attached to a computer, you know that the ball mechanism can get pretty dirty. That explains why the cursor on your screen sometimes jumps from here...to there...and seems out of control. You can and should take it apart to clean it every once in a while. But Microsoft is out with new technology that gets rid of the dirt problem once and for all...using optics .....instead of a ball. Product manager Tim McDonough...

"When you pick one of these new optical mice up and flip it over, on the bottom there is no longer a ball. Instead you'll see a tiny glowing sensor. And what this is, is actually an amazing digital camera that is taking fifteen hundred pictures a second of your desktop or where ever you're using your mouse and using that to track movement and translate that into movement on your screen."

It doesn't pick up dirt and doesn't need a mouse pad.

"What this will work on is really hundreds of surfaces. The camera's just tracking details, so it is going to work on a desktop, it's going to see the grain in wood, it will see the little details in a piece of formica, it'll even see the fibers in a piece of blank, white printer paper."

It will not work on a glass surface or any reflective surface. Prices start at under sixty dollars, you should find it in stores soon.
