Techstination feature for Thursday, August 7, 2008

Design your own mobile phone...at least on the outside. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. T-Mobile is out with an updated Sidekick....the swivel screen, keyboard equipped phone that hit the market six years ago. It is the first new Sidekick since Microsoft acquired Danger....the makes the software that powers the device. Among the new features....is the ability for users to go on the Web to design their own shells...to replace the exterior that ships with the phone. Marketing manager Ximena Cuevas....

"One of the big features that we are promoting and that we are very excited about is you can actually design your own Sidekick. You can make it your own. You can go to a Web site and really upload your photos and make that your Sidekick and change your outfit and change your device, you can change the color. You can really play around and express yourself with this new Sidekick."

The site is sidekickshells.com....and you can browse what some other folks have created. The price...about 15 dollars. The phone itself sells for about 150 dollars with a contract. One down side... it is not yet designed to take advantage of the high speed network T-Mobile is rolling out. But there are some other new features...

"It's the first Sidekick to actually come with video. So you'll be able to record, play and send video. So another way to communicate is to take a video and send it to your friends and share it. It has Bluetooth and Web browsing and improved IM experience where you can do group chats."
