New Portable Internet Devices From Archos

Techstination feature for Wednesday, August 20, 2008

New portable Internet devices from Archos. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Archos, a company that has been a pioneer in portable media players....even before the Apple iPod arrived on the branching out. The latest devices are being called portable Internet media tablets. North America General Manager Ron Ferguson ...

"It's like having the power of a PC in the palm of your hand. We will have the first implementation of the new Texas Instruments ARM Cortex processor. What does that mean to you? It means that you'll have the speed of a PC or of a laptop in the palm of your hand in a portable device. First portable device to be able to do this."

That means Web pages open quickly. The devices have email capability including Microsoft Exchange...

"And as Archos has always done in the past, you'll be able to store and play all of your media. Whether it's movies, photos, music. And it will have a number of accessories that will allow you to record your favorite TV shows and take them with you. So it's kind of like having your Archos players, your portable media players of the past, with the speed of a PC."

The Archos 5 with a 60 gigabyte hard drive will sell for about 349 dollars, with a 120 gigabyte version costing 50 dollars more. The company will also sell Archos 7 models...with 7 inch touch screens. They'll arrive in stores over the next few weeks.
