Consumers are consuming more mobile data. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. American consumers are catching on to the usefulness of mobile data....thanks in no small part to Apple's iPhone. AT&T vice president for consumer data services Mark Collins puts it this way...
"I don't think there's any question the iPhone has proven when you deliver the customer a great user experience, they'll engage in the product. And that's certainly what we've seen and I think it's raised the bar for other device manufacturers as well as everybody else in the ecosystem."
That would include phones that use Google's new Android operating system, Microsoft's Windows Mobile, Nokia's Symbian and Research in Motion's BlackBerry. And Collins says wireless data use is just getting started...
"The wireless data business is a great business. We're still in the early stages. There are only a couple of use cases so far that have driven this business and there are so many more out there. What's happened so far is email and messaging has really driven the business. And when you think about all the things customers can connect to, connecting to their world, whether it's an application for social networking or whether it's an application for financial services or an application or content that's meaningful to them, there are just so many more reasons to believe we think there's tremendous growth available still in this business."
One indication of the demand.... Apple says there have been more than 100 million downloads from its iPhone App store....since its launch in July. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
