Yahoo Bets on OneConnect

Techstination feature for Wednesday, October 1, 2008

Yahoo bets on OneConnect. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. With Google continuing to dominate the Internet search market on desktop PCs.....Yahoo is counting on mobile search and applications to help it grow. And one of those key applications is called OneConnect....initially released for Apple's iPhone. Yahoo senior VP Marco Boerries....

"The concept is basically to give you a tool to connect to all the people you care about, regardless of how you communicate with them. Whether it's with social networks like Facebook, MySpace or Twitter or Flickr . Or whether it's via email, SMS or messaging. Basically give you one product to go to to keep in touch with people that really matter to you."

The neat thing is ....you can view your contacts from all of those services...on one screen. Yahoo is promising versions for other smartphones as well...including BlackBerries, Windows Mobile and Nokia Series 60 devices. Yahoo won a recent battle when it landed an agreement with AT&T...the largest wireless carrier...to be the default search engine on phones it sells....

"Search, as you know, is free to the consumer and then you monetize search with advertisements. So it's a great business opportunity for us together with AT&T and the other partners we have for OneSearch across the world to develop the search advertising market on mobile."

The potential for search advertising on mobile phones...may be enormous....with advertisers possibly knowing not only who you are....but where you are ...at any given time. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
