A legendary video game maker prepares for lift off. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Richard Garriott ...the son of former NASA astronaut Owen Garriott...is scheduled to fly with a Russian crew to the International Space Station on October 12th. Garriott ...who helped to create the Ultima video game series...and more recently Tabula Rasa....has been training for nine months. He plans to conduct a physics experiment in space....and is also carrying with him what is being called the Immortality Drive....carrying digitized gene sequences of some Tabula Rasa game players into space. And when word got out about the plan, he started hearing from lots of other people...
"Everything from sports figures, politicians ... all asking if they could be part of it. And of course, from our perspective, we thought this was almost a story unto itself. Just how strong the interest was to participate in this way. I'm sure you're familiar with Stephen Colbert who ...we announced his participation. And then just a couple of days ago, we had announced Stephen Hawking. And interestingly, I have a little bit of history with Stephen. I had the great pleasure to take him on a zero g flight about a year and a half ago."
Garriott has been a pioneer in the effort to make civilian space flight a reality through his involvement with Space Adventures and the X Prize. And for him, he says, this trip is just the beginning.
