A new electronic book reader from Sony. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Sony, which has been going head to head with Amazon.com in the electronic book business....has announced a new version of its Reader, PRS-700 ....with some added capabilities. Steve Haber is president of Sony's digital reading business division...
"The first thing we added was a built in light. Many folks keep on asking us..I'd like to read in bed, I'd like to read on the plane. We have an accessory to the 505, but the 700 it actually comes built into it. The other changes or additional features of the 700 versus the 505 is touch screen. So now, you don't have to push the buttons, you can just touch the screen. If you want to just select a book, you just choose the book you'd like. And then, once you're in the book, you can actually change pages by swiping your finger. And then once you swipe it, if you hold your finger down it will continue to change pages for you. We've also added additional font size increases. In the 505 it's small, medium and large. In the 700 you have XL and then XXL...and you actually can zoom in."
The 700 will go on sale next month for about 400 dollars...about a hundred more than the Sony Reader 505. Unlike the Amazon Kindle, the Sony Readers can't download content wirelessly...but that capability may be added to a future version. Sony does allow books to be shared on multiple readers or PCs from one account. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
