Searching for Something to Do... Zvents

Techstination feature for Friday, October 31, 2008

Searching for something to do? Turn to the Web. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Lot's of people turn to the Internet to look up movie listings or restaurant reviews. A company called Zvents...has partnered with newspapers around the country to consolidate listings of all types of events.....and uses its own search technology as well. VP Paul O'Brien...

"We really refer to it as the Zvents network. The index, as is typically the case with a search engine, is comprehensive and syndicated across the entire network. So as events come in, either from end users adding listings to the index, or events that we find with our own search technology, they're distributed throughout the Boston Globe, to San Jose Mercury News, all the way up to MSN as far as portals are concerned and down to entertainment sites such as MTV."

You can search for concerts and other types of performances for your home area....or a city you may be traveling to. And ....

"We go well beyond that. We define events as really being anything that's a promotional, time based opportunity to take place or interact with a local business. And so it includes certainly the arts and entertainment that most people expect when you hear something like the word events. But it also includes sales, conferences, seminars, even things like open houses, which we consider events for houses that are on sale."

You'll also find listings for movies and restaurants as well...although ratings aren't nearly as full featured as what you'll find at specialized sites such as Zagat. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
