A pioneer of the digital age....taps into mobile and casual entertainment. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. He was an executive at Apple Computer in its early days....and left to start a little video game company called Electronic Arts. But now a days....Trip Hawkins is focused on his latest company....called Digital Chocolate. And if you haven't heard much about the company...chances are you have heard about some its games....
"Tower Bloxx for example. It's been installed by more than two million people on Facebook alone and it's been played on the Web over fifty million times. And Roller Coaster Rush, that's another game that's been very extensively played on the Web. And what we're finding is that the Web makes it much simpler for the word to get around. And that's not only driving increased sales of the mobile versions of our games, it's also enabling us to open up new markets, like selling premium versions on the PC."
And Digital Chocolate sees its next big opportunity in social games....like one called AvaPeeps....and a convergence between PC based games...and those designed for mobile devices. Thanks in no small part...says Hawkins...to Apple's iPhone...
"It's really the first time that the public could look at a mobile phone and say, hey, that's not really a phone, that's a mobile computer, that's a content platform that I would want to use. Until the iPhone came along, I think people looked a the phones and say, well, I need a voice phone, and maybe it's got some other features. The iPhone came along and the irony is that I think that people don't really care too much about it as a phone...and yet it's called the iPhone."
