Hearing Music Through Your Bones

Techstination feature for Thursday, November 6, 2008

Hearing music through your bones. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. At first glance, they look like many other behind the head earphones. But Audio Bones...don't go into your ears at all. The sound is transmitted through your bones in front of your ears. It is called bone conduction....and Gamechanger Products CEO Larry Popelka says....it offers several advantages...

"I'm a runner and a cyclist and I could never find headphones that I really felt safe wearing when I was out running and cycling. And when I saw this product I realized that it could have great potential for that and really help a lot of people out."

Because your ears aren't covered while you're listening to music....you can still hear everything else around you. They are also waterproof...and can be worn while swimming...assuming you have a waterproof case for your music player. In addition...there is less danger ....says Popelka...to your hearing...

"With Audio Bone, the sound is going through your bones so it's not going through your ear drum, so there's no risk of ear drum damage with it. So it's actually a lot safer way to listen and there have been a lot of studies about conduction and the safety of bone conduction."

The sound is good...but not great. The sound can't really compare with high end regular headphones. But the price...is on the high end...about 180 dollars. They may be best suited for those outdoor situations when you want to hear your music...without shutting out the rest of the world. You can find more information at AudioBoneHeadphones.com.
