Multi-Touch Screen on a Notebook PC

Techstination feature for Wednesday, December 3, 2008

A multi-touch screen on a notebook PC. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. It is called the HP TouchSmart TX2...the latest generation convertible tablet notebook from Hewlett Packard. And for the first time...it brings multi touch gesturing...the ability to use two fingers...to resize photos for instance...to a notebook screen. Multi-touch is one of the cool features of the iPhone....and on the touchpads of some Apple notebooks. HP technical marketing manager Kevin Wentzel...

"We've gone to a capacitive display, which means it's very, very sensitive. It's easy to touch any of the icons, it's easy to launch a program with it, easy to do any of the kinds of things that you normally do with a mouse by just touching the screen. And that's great for when you're on an airplane or something like that where you don't have a whole lot of room. And sometimes it's kind of cramped to touch the keyboard or anything. For the multi-touch, we've defined a couple of gestures. One of those gestures is a two fingered M that gets us into our MediaSmart software. This MediaSmart software is the multimedia hub for the HP notebook PCs."

HP has pioneered the use of touch screens on desktop PCs as well....with its TouchSmart line. The TX2 isn't what you would call a thin and light notebook....weighing in at about five pounds. Pricing starts at about 1150 dollars with an AMD Turion dual core processor. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin
