Sony Takes Advantage of Digital SLR Popularity

Techstination feature for Monday, December 22, 2008

When it comes to digital cameras, lots of consumers are looking to upgrade. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Sales of digital single lens reflex...or DSLR cameras....have been one of the few bright spots for consumer electronics manufacturers during the holiday season. That's especially so for Sony....which only entered the DSLR category two and half years ago with its purchase of the business from Konica Minolta. Why the demand for digital SLRs? Marketing manager Mark Weir...

"Most consumers are repeat purchasers now with digital cameras. They're not new to digital cameras. And in that this is a second, third or fourth digital camera in many cases, a fair number of consumers are looking for taking the next step in their photography, looking for a camera that takes better pictures, or perhaps solves problems that they might have had with earlier cameras. Cameras that shoot faster or provide better picture quality or more versatility."

Sony now has a full line of cameras with interchangeable lenses for consumers starting at about 500 dollars....and has jumped into high end pro space as well....with the 25 megapixel full frame sensor a900...competing with the best Nikon and Canon have to offer....

"We have core competencies in sensor technology, processor technology, lens technology."

For some consumers...price remains an obstacle...along with the larger size of digital SLR cameras. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
