When it comes to camcorders in 2009...the focus is on HD. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Canon, one of the best known names in photography and imaging, has announced its revamped lineup of camcorders for the new year....and it should come as no surprise....that high definition models are the big focus. And so is the use of flash memory for recording video. Marketing supervisor Ben Thomas says flash memory is more durable than tape or DVD.....and...

"We have a new flagship model for 2009, it is our Vixia HFS 10. This model is a very robust camcorder. It features a dual flash memory, which means it has 32 gigabytes of built in memory as well as you can record to an SD memory card. So with 32 gigabytes, you can record up to 3 hours in high definition video. We have a new Digic DV3 image processor. This is new for 2009. This is our third generation chip which allows us now to have face detection. Face detection is very new for us, it's very advanced. It gives you the ability to detect 35 individual faces at one time. And you can choose, select a face that you would want to track throughout the whole time."

Canon is boosting the still camera capability to 8 megapixels...with a flash and 10 times optical zoom. The HFS 10 arrives in March with a list price of about 13 hundred dollars. Other Canon HD camcorders start at about a thousand. There is plenty of competition....from Sony, Panasonic, Samsung and others. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
