New connections for consumers from Cisco. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Cisco Systems...owner of the Linksys brand of networking equipment...is branching out....into devices for storing and sharing digital content. Vice President Greg Memo says a new Media Hub...is aimed at creating a centralized digital storage location....that can be accessed from anywhere....
"We have a current problem in a lot of consumers' homes, which is a lot of digital content spread around a lot of different PCs and both a concern that you're going to lose your content and then secondly, you don't even know where it is when you want to find it. So we know that consumers have this issue right now. And really what we're going to be able to do, I think the time is right now to bring a product like this out to start to say, hey, we can make your life easier, we can secure your content, we can allow you to find it easily and then start to enjoy it."
Pricing...for a 500 gigabyte Media Hub...starts at about 300 dollars. Cisco is also introducing a new Wireless Home Audio system....to compete with devices sold by Sonos and Logitech. Memo says it includes a touch screen controller and multi-zone playback....
"And it is a family of products which ranges from a player that will connect to your home stereo all the way up to an all in one music unit."
Pricing starts at about 300 dollars. Both products, announced at the Consumer Electronics Show...are on sale now. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
