Market for iPhone/iPod Add-ons Keeps Rolling

Techstination feature for Tuesday, January 13, 2009

The market for iPhone and iPod add-ons...keeps rolling along. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. There are lots of companies that have built businesses around the success of Apple's media players and phones. Companies like Griffin Technology and Proporta have been selling everything from cases to car connection kits. At Sound Design Technologies....the iPod and iPhone have turned the company's iHome brand....into the leading maker of clock radios. VP Evan Stein...

"It's been four years and we've been number one since we launched and it comes down to two things, number one quality and number one price. And we've got a quality product out there. It's priced for the masses, it's at 99 dollars."

Now iHome is branching out....into the higher end with the IP One....

"It's an iPod/iPhone speaker system. The way it's going to set the standard in sound is it has new patented technology called Digital Power Station. It produces a really, really impressive sound in a really compact package. And what we're saying is it allows users to hear the music the way it was meant to sound."

Stein says the technology decompresses the audio to restore some of the original richness of the sound. It will arrive by the middle of the year for about three hundred dollars. Similar technology will also be offered in a portable sound system...the IP 49. iHome faces a long list of competitors...including some well known names in the audio business like Bose, JBL and Altec Lansing.
