Digital Messaging Everywhere

Techstination feature for Thursday, February 26, 2009

Digital messaging....everywhere. Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. MIT Media Lab spin-off Ambient Devices....has a whole new way to keep people connected. The company, for the last seven or eight years....has been making gadgets for the home or office...that get wireless signals to display ....everything from the weather, to stocks and sports scores. And now...says VP Mark Prince....

"Ambient is announcing a completely new type of messaging service. We're working with the internal description of Ambient location messaging. What this does, it allows anyone who's got one of the new Ambient products, to send a message directly to the product. Our products are things like weather forecasters that people typically have in the home or in the office. They're not connected to the PC, they're not connected to any type of traditional network. For example, you can send a message to the family if you use your weather forecaster in the kitchen saying hey, I'll be home late, dinner's in the fridge. This is a great way of keeping in touch with the most connected people who might not have time to plow through a very full in box. Or a great way to keep in touch with the least connected people. For example, if you give your parents a weather forecaster you can send them a personal message that says happy birthday, grandma. And she'll get that instantly."

The capability will only work with new Ambient gadgets...due out later this year....and it will carry a subscription fee of about thirty dollars a year. Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
