Will Streaming HD Movies Threaten Blu-ray?

Techstination feature for Tuesday, March 10, 2009

Will streaming HD movies over the Internet...threaten the future of Blu-ray DVDs? Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. More and more high definition TVs are being made with built in Internet connections....and other types of boxes....like Microsoft's Xbox 360, Vudu....and Tivo DVRs....are connected as well. And that is enabling consumers to watch movies ...some in high def... without having to buy or rent DVDs. So what about the future....for Blu-ray players....will streaming movies mean who needs them? At Samsung, executive VP Tim Baxter says....absolutely not...

"Clearly there is an emergence of new ways to receive content in digital form. We think they're actually complementary. Many of our step up products in Blu-ray have the ability to also download videos via Netflix or music via Pandora."

For now at least....Blu-ray still has the edge in delivering the highest quality picture and sound....

"We think there are times, if I want to watch the best in high definition in a cinematic home environment, Blu-ray package media delivers that best experience. If I want quick access to content, that is a choice you make about accessibility of content and you make trade-offs."

But as higher speed networks arrive...along with increased digital storage capacity in the home....those trade-offs may not be necessary in the not too distant future. Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
