Short term car rentals that are long on tech. I'm Fred Fishkin with technology Boot Camp, a report on gadgets and gear. Hertz wasn't the first company to get into the business of renting cars by the hour, but it is using technology to grow it in cities and now on college campuses. Connect by Hertz uses essentially embedded mobile phone technology from AT&T, combined with GPS and RFID....to allow service subscribers...to reserve cars....and simply walk up and drive away. Hertz Senior VP Joe Eckroth says ...the connectivity is key....

"We know mileage, we know how far it's been driven if we need to know that. We know if the maintenance light comes on so that we can dispatch repair for that. We know fuel levels. As we evolve this technology, we'll give people the freedom to do a one way rental. So that they can pick the car up in one place, drop it in another and we'll know exactly where the car is."
