With skyrocketing unemployment, more people are using the Internet to create their own businesses. I'm Fred Fishkin with technology Boot Camp, a report on gadgets and gear. The folks at Intuit, makers of Quicken and QuickBooks, are seeing the phenomenon first hand. With so many people having lost their jobs in the corporate world...growing numbers are creating their own businesses. Justin Kitch, VP of Intuit's Small Business Group...says at the company's Homestead Web site division....
"We're seeing unbelievable growth numbers, up in the 60 and 70 percent increase year over year in new customers coming on to create Web sites. They're often started from the kitchen table and their only physical presence is their Web site. So that's one of the leading indicators that we see for new business starts. And people are doing that sometimes because they got laid off, or other times because they are needing to augment as a second income."
Intuit is offering a variety of tools that help new businesses get off the ground...some of them for free. You can find us with archives, product giveaways and more at BootCamp.com. I'm Fred Fishkin.
