An artist who pulls no punches with digital music. I'm Fred Fishkin with technology Boot Camp, a report on gadgets and gear. Trent Reznor...has made no secret of his distaste of the recording industry. And the singer/songwriter/musician was named Artist of the Year by the Webbys this month for opting to release his Nine Inch Nails album The Slip, for free, on the band's Web site. Reznor says young people today expect music to be free. About the future of music distribution, he says...
"It could all change tomorrow if record labels would say hey...two dollars more on your ISP bill and all music is free. If they could find a way to divvy that up, and you had access to any music you wanted, whether it be downloaded or streamed, that would solve the problem today. It would give consumers what they want. But that will never happen because the people running these record labels have built an industry that's dead. It's like oil men trying to move to solar power. They're not going to give up."
The solution... Reznor says he is still giving that a lot of thought. You can find us with archives, interviews and more... at BootCamp.com.
