Controlling Lights, Locks and More... From an iPhone

Techstination feature for Friday, August 14, 2009

Controlling your lights, door locks and more...with an iPhone. I'm Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear. It's the kind of technology that is just plain cool. Door locks and deadbolts ...light switches...thermostats and more...that communicate with a wireless hub. The folks at Schlage call it SchlageLink. The system uses what is called the Zwave standard...and a hub that plugs into your broadband Internet connection. And about the mobile connection, Product manager Steve Samolinski says...

"It works with most Web enabled mobile phones. So if you've got Blackberries, iPhones. The new Palm operating system isn't supported yet. Android application isn't supported yet. But those are coming soon."

With any phone, parents can receive alerts by text when their kids get home from school. A starter kit with a lock, light module and wireless bridge sells for about 300 dollars. You can find us with archives, interviews...and this week a giveaway contest to win a Seagate FreeAgent Go hard drive at BootCamp.com. I'm Fred Fishkin.
