Safe to Eat Those Leftovers? There's an App for That

Techstination feature for Tuesday, December 29, 2009

Is it safe to eat those holiday leftovers? There's an app for that. I'm Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear. Chances are...you've got a bunch of stuff in the fridge in containers or wrapped in foil...and you are wondering...can I still eat that. There's help online and from an iPhone app called StillTasty. The Web site is free to use...the app costs a dollar 99. What does it do? Co-founder Janice Revell...

"For instance if you open up your fridge door and you see a hunk of cheddar cheese sitting there, you log onto our Web site, type in cheddar cheese, and up will come all the information you need to know about whether it's still safe to eat, how you should be storing it and some tips to keep it tasting its best."

Much of the food safety information comes from government agencies in the U.S. and Canada. The iPhone app adds some neat functions like alerts to remind you when food you have should be eaten or tossed...along with shopping lists. You can find us with archives, interviews and more at BootCamp.com. I'm Fred Fishkin.
