Augmented Reality Turning Up in More Places

Techstination feature for Friday, March 26, 2010

Augmented reality. It's turning up in more and more places. I'm Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear. It's technology that bridges the gap between what's real and what's virtual. A company called Total Immersion is working with a growing list of partners to bring augmented reality into a variety of products and experiences. For instance, says CEO Bruno Uzzan... you'll find it in Mattel's Avatar action figures...which come with plastic i-Tags. Hold the tag up to a Web cam on an Internet connect computer...

"And then while he's holding that piece, he can see some 3D animation coming from the movie merged on that piece in real time. That's a way for the kids to be able to interact with the 3D in real time. He can really be part of the show...that's the essence of this application."

There are other...more serious applications in medicine, for instance, that will be using augmented reality. You can find more info and a cool demo at t-immersion.com. You can find us at BootCamp.com. I'm Fred Fishkin
