A Contact Lens Chip to Detect Glaucoma

Techstination feature for Friday, April 9, 2010

A chip worn on the eye...to detect glaucoma. I'm Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear. It's the second most common cause of blindness around the world....but the progress of glaucoma can be controlled if it is detected and treated early. A new detection method has been developed by Sensimed....using a tiny chip on a contact lens that is worn for 24 hours....which monitors pressure in the eye and sends data to a small receiver worn around the neck. It uses chip technology from STMicroelectronics where VP Benedetto Vigna says it produces more accurate results than tests done with a puff of air by eye doctors today....

"It's much more precise, first of all. And two, it's a continuous measurement of the pressure of the eye."

Sensimed is expected to begin the process of seeking approvals for use in the United States next year. You can find us with archives, interviews and more at BootCamp.com. I'm Fred Fishkin.
