The smartphone takeover. I'm Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear. How many people do you know with smartphones? BlackBerries, Androids and iPhones are everywhere these days. But there is plenty of room for them to grow according to the NPD Group where the executive director of industry analysis, Ross Rubin, says they still represent only about a third of the mobile phones sold in the U.S...
"You know smartphone prices have come down considerably. We've seen them for 99 dollars, in some cases less. We're starting to see them free, given away free with contracts. And at some point we're going to reach a level where the 30 dollar a month mandatory data plan is really the limiting factor to their growth."
For now...the Android phones arriving on the market have passed Apple's iPhone sales in the U.S....but still trail BlackBerry handsets. You can find us with archives, interviews and more at BootCamp.com. I'm Fred Fishkin.
